The enchanting Danish town of Solvang and its surrounding Santa Ynez Valley work together to create a beautiful wonderland. From magically extravagant Christmas festivals to horseback riding in the valley, these destinations do not disappoint.
Solvang California: California’s Denmark

Solvang is famous for being the West Coast’s historic Danish town, which boasts a calm and friendly environment. It’s a hub for Nordic tourists, or those who admire the culture. Boutique and specialty shops, Scandinavian art galleries, and admirable wine tasting rooms outline the town, in which guests enjoy year-round.
Santa Ynez Valley – Wine Country

Wine lovers and those who appreciate a good view are bound to fall in love with the Santa Ynez Valley. Aside from the famous wineries that reside here – 120 to be exact – the valley is also home to some impressive ranches, farms, and resorts. Additionally, many wineries are only a 30 minute drive from Santa Barbara.
Santa Ynez Valley – Wineries
The Santa Ynez Valley is by far one of the greatest places in the country for wine tasting. A true wine connoisseur will appreciate the locally cultivated beverages, and those who can’t tell the difference between Shiraz and Cabernet will fall in love with the astounding scenery. Santa Ynez is one of the more remote locations in Southern California; a peaceful getaway from the city.
If the winery scene sounds appealing to you (how could it not?) be sure to visit these vineyards and tasting rooms:
- Rusack Vineyards
- Shoestring Winery
- Lucas & Lewellen Vineyards
- Rideau Vineyards
- Lions Peak Vineyards
- Toccata Tasting Room
- Bella Cavalli Farms & Vineyards

Danish Days, Julefest, and Solvang Grape Stomp
If you can, plan your trip in time to experience some of Solvang’s annual festivals. Attending a Solvang festival is truly like being transported to Denmark.
Julefest is likely the most reputable of them all, which lasts from November 27-January 1st. The lengthy event serves as an elaborate Christmas celebration, and the town converts into your storybook dreams. There is always something going on (you can find the schedule here) including Santa’s Village, a Tree Lighting Ceremony, and a Holiday Food Tour.
For an authentic wine-making experience paired with Danish food tasting, visit Solvang in October for the annual Grape Stomp. Guests can participate in crafting the beverage, listening to live music, and celebrating the beginning of fall.
Danish Days are held for a long weekend in September. Admission is free, and guests are introduced to a series of performances, three street parades, and the best Danish food around. There is even a Viking Encampment and rock concert line-up.
