A Fun And Easy Guide To The Home Buying Process

Some years I spend more days traveling the globe than I do at home. I love it and wouldn’t change anything. It’s my life. It fills me. It inspires me.

As time went on, though, the importance of “my own” little corner became undeniable. There is something special about knowing that no matter where in the world you are, there is a place that’s just yours, filled with dear-to-your-heart pieces, a place where you laugh and cry together, a place where you make memories that last a lifetime.

A place that you call home.

Buying a home is a big decision, but through the process I’ve learned that it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a little planning and research, you can find the perfect dream home that matches your and/or your family’s needs.

Whether you are ready to buy now or considering it for the future, here are some tips to get you started:

Research And Set A Budget

Before you start looking at homes, it’s important to know how much you can afford. This will help you narrow down your search and avoid wasting time looking at homes that are out of your price range. The Rocket Mortgage® Affordability Calculator and Learning Center can help you nail down a budget for your future home.

Figure out what’s important to you. Location was important to me. I need a place that’s walkable, close to the ocean and in a good area.

That takes precedence over everything else.

Then there are more questions to ask:

What do you want in a home? Light is essential for me. What is it for you?

Do you need a certain number of bedrooms and bathrooms? Do you want a yard? Do you want to be close to schools or shopping? Or both?

Figure out what’s important to you before focusing your search on homes. It will save you time and make the search easier.

Find A Trustworthy Real Estate Agent

A good real estate agent can be a valuable asset during the home buying process. Rocket HomesSM Partner Agents are verified real estate agents who can help you find homes that meet your needs, negotiate on your behalf and guide you through the entire process. They are your best friends, really. Make sure your agent has your back AND understands your needs; I found this to be most important.

Get Preapproved For A Mortgage

Do it. Without a doubt.

Getting preapproved for a mortgage will show sellers that you’re serious about buying a home and that you’re likely to be able to get financing. This can give you an edge in a competitive market. Trust me, you need it today more than ever. Finding the right mortgage company is even more important.

After extensive research, I partnered with Rocket Mortgage because of their unique offers that make this process seamless. Their BUY+ offer simplifies the home buying process – when you partner with both Rocket Homes to buy a home and Rocket Mortgage to finance, you could get up to $10,000 cash toward closing from Rocket Mortgage!

Start Looking At Homes

My favorite part!

With research done and a real estate agent locked in, it’s time to start looking at homes. Research different styles of homes and different neighborhoods to get an idea on what is available that fits within your budget. The Rocket Homes app makes this process easy to explore listings from anywhere. I can’t emphasize enough how important this part is.

Even if you think you found your dream home, keep looking for a little longer just to make sure.

You want to be 100% sure when you make your offer.

Make An Offer

Once you’ve found a home that you love, it’s time to make an offer. Your real estate agent will help with this process.

The seller may not accept your initial offer. In this case, you’ll need to negotiate with the seller, through your real estate agent, to reach an agreement on a price.

Close On The Home

Once an agreement on a price is reached, it’s time to close on the home. This is the final step in the home buying process.

Here are a few more additional tips that were game changers for me in my home buying research:

Educate Yourself On The Home Buying Process

The Rocket Mortgage Learning Center is a great place to start, with articles including How to Get A Mortgage Preapproval and a Home Buying Checklist For First-Time Home Buyers helping you to avoid common mistakes buyers make.

Ask Questions

Your real estate agent and mortgage company should be happy to answer any questions you have about the home buying process.

One of the most important things you can do when buying a home is to establish trust with your real estate agent and mortgage company. These are the people who will be helping you through the entire process, so it’s important to feel comfortable with them.

I cannot highlight enough how amazing Rocket Mortgage has been from day one. Even if you are not a first-time home buyer, I found all the information given to be extremely helpful. I genuinely feel like Rocket Mortgage does both: Puts my needs and interests first and has my back as well.

Be honest with the agent and mortgage company about your needs and budget. The more they know about what you’re looking for, the better they can help you find the perfect home.

Being responsive to their calls and emails is the easiest way to keep the communication going between you and your agent about your wants and needs, it also shows that you are invested in the process.

Buying a home is definitely a big decision, but even the process is such a rewarding experience. Especially when done in partnership with Rocket Mortgage.

Tell me, where are you in your home buying (or maybe selling?!) process?

How has it been going for you so far?
